SR Standard Bogie Brake Van Diagram 1550

The diagram 1550 bogie brakes were purpose built vans resulting from a previous build of 25 vans converted from LBSCR ‘SC’ motor luggage vans to diagram 1580. The new builds were built on a shortened version of the standard carriage underframes and were fitted with standard carriage bogies.

SR/BR Express Bogie Guards Van Known affectionately as a Queen Mary Brake Van, 25 were built by the Southern Railway in 1936 and used, as the title implies, to run at express passenger speeds behind fast goods trains. They were long lived and some remain in use to this day. This kit was sourced from the same manufacturer as the bogie ballast hopper and uses etched brass for the superstructure, whilst the bogies supplied are one piece plastic mouldings by BH Enterprises. As with the hopper, this model was originally produced for 4mm use and following its reduction to 2mm scale there are a number of tiny parts involved in the kits assembly which makes it only really suitable for the more experienced modeller. Order Code: NGK05 Price each: £10.35

Built in 1936, this Southern Railway bogie goods brake van was rated at 25 tons. The van section is of 'normal' length with exceptionally long verandahs to put the guard's door over the bogie centres. Not the large sand hoppers on the exterior of the varandah. This example was photographed as late as 1964.
