The music for the Titfield Thunderbolt was written by Georges Auric (1899-1983), a very talented
French composer who wrote the soundtracks for a large number of French films before finding work in the UK. This quickly led to him becoming the resident composer for the series of films commonly known as the "Ealing Comedies" named after the studio which produced them. These films included the likes of "Passport to Pimlico", "The Lavender Hill Mob" and of course "The Titfield Thunderbolt."
In 1962 he gave up writing for motion pictures when he became director of the Paris Opera and then chairman of SACEM, the French Performing Rights Society. Georges Auric continued to write classical chamber music, especially for wind instruments, right up to his death.
