    Operations

    1960 Sectional Appendix

    1. Steventon To Huntspill Section
    2. Charfield To Bristol T.M. (Excl.) Section

    Lawrence Hill

Engines must not remain standing under the Gloucester Line Railway Bridge.

Dividing Excursion And Other Special Trains At Lawrence Hill

Unless special instructions are given to the contrary by the District Traffic Superintendent, the following instructions must be observed when an Excursion or other Special passenger train has to be divided on the Up Relief Line at Lawrence Hill, one portion (herein referred to as portion "A") proceeding to Stapleton Road or beyond, and the other portion (referred to as portion "B") proceeding to Dr. Day's Bridge or beyond.

The coaches forming portion "B" must always be in front, and the coaches forming portion "A" at the rear of such trains on arriving at Lawrence Hill.

The engine provided to work portion "B" from Lawrence Hill must be held in readiness in the Goods Yard at that Station. On arrival of the train at No. 1 Platform, after the respective portions have been disconnected and other necessary preparations made, the incoming engine with portion "B" must draw ahead clear of the cross-over points. The engine provided to work portion "B" from Lawrence Hill must then set back from the Goods Yard on to that portion and must be coupled up. At the same time the incoming engine must be detached from the Stapleton Road end. Portion "B" must then be drawn over the crossover road to No. 2 Platform and proceed thence when ready.

As soon as portion "B" has been cleared from the Up Relief Line the train engine must set back 1 on to portion "A", which will proceed when ready.

    Shunting At Lawrence Hill

When it is necessary for a freight train to shunt in and out of the Yard with more than 20 wagons on the engine, the Shunter must obtain the permission of the Signalman and also see that the necessary fixed signal is lowered before the movement is made.

    Dr. Day's Bridge Junction

The Enginemen working Double-loaded Freight trains for Severn Tunnel Junction or beyond will give one crow whistle when passing Dr. Day's Signal Box. The Signalman at Dr. Day's must then telephone to the Tunnel Inspector at Pilning Junction that an assistant engine is required for the Severn Tunnel.

In cases of trains stopping at Dr. Day's for examination the Examiner after completing the examinition must advise the Guard accordingly and the Guard must advise the Enginemen that the train is ready and at the same time ascertain whether the train has to call at Lawrence Hill to take water and whether an assistant engine will be required from Stapleton Road to Filton and/or Pilning to Severn Tunnel Junction.

The information must then be given by the Guard to the Dr. Day's Bridge Junction Signalman on the telephone located on Dr. Day's Bridge Junction Up Relief Loop Inner Home Signal, and the Signalman must advise the Signalman at Lawrence Hill, or Stapleton Road or the Severn Tunnel Inspector at Pilning Junction the required information.

Trains with a Single Load for the Severn Tunnel will not sound the crow whistle on passing Dr. Day's, and in such cases (unless verbal information is given to the contrary) the trains will be reported to the Tunnel Inspector as single loads for the Severn Tunnel.

    Eastman's Siding

A telephone has been fixed between Dr. Day's Bridge Junction Signal Box and the Signal post near Messrs. Eastman's Private Siding for the use of Trainmen doing work at the Siding in order to facilitate the working and prevent the men crossing the Running Lines to speak to the Signalman.

This Siding falls towards Lawrence Hill, and there is a risk if wagons are not carefully handled they will run away and collide heavily with the stop blocks. Persons conducting shunting operations at the Sidings are instructed to do so with every care to prevent such a mishap.
